One of our favorite parts of going to a Texas beach is having a quiet, cozy reading spot. Whether you’re enjoying these novels under an umbrella with your toes buried in the sand, or whether you’ve ventured closer to the water for the white noise of the waves, these books about beaches are sure to be the perfect addition to your beach vacation.
Summer Sisters by Judy Blume – We know what you’re thinking: but Judy Blume is a kid’s author! Summer Sisters was actually Blume’s 1998 debut to a more mature writing style. This story features the coming-of-age tale of two frenemies who spend every summer together on the beach. The nostalgia encapsulated in the pages is sure to brighten any beach day, but be warned – there may be just a bit of risque content.
The Vacationers by Emma Straub – Just looking at the beautiful cover of this book will set off some beachy vibes! New York Times-bestselling author Emma Straub delights with this classic take on the family vacation and how much things can change from year to year. There’s plenty of vivid imagery to get you in the summer mood; plus, there’s plenty of fascinating characters to keep you engaged! Overall, we highly recommend this beachy novel while you are on a Texas beach!
On the Beach by Richard Misrach – Considered one of the foremost contemporary masters, Misrach will draw you in with his stunning depictions of everyday features. This book is mostly an exhibition catalog, but we highly recommend browsing his gallery before and during your own beach adventure. Who knows – you may be inspired to take some pictures of your own!
The Shark Club by Ann Kidd Taylor – In this romance-esque novel, Taylor shows how childhood wounds can affect you later on in life and gives an epic and realistic depiction of the bonds (and broken bonds) of siblinghood. If you are looking for a novel that will fully immerse you in the beach experience, this is definitely the book for you.
Waves and Beaches: The Dynamics of the Ocean Surface by Willard Bascom – If fiction isn’t your thing, we’ve got you covered. This book analyzes the dynamics of coastal features and waves and discusses how man has attempted to manipulate the shoreline. We recommend it for those that are really into environmental science or are interested in learning more about the place they are visiting.
The Sunshine Sisters by Jane Green – This book is a true beachside drama (and we mean that in the best way possible!) The Sunshine Sisters follows the story of a mother and her three daughters as she asks for her help in ending her own life. While you will definitely need tissues, this book truly renders how meaningful a beach experience can be and will have you reeling to hug your mom as soon as possible. It’s the perfect special feeling you need for a solo beach experience.
